Deliveroo calls for a ban on unsafe e-bike conversion kits under its new Ride Safe campaign.
Food delivery platform Deliveroo has asked the Government to prohibit the sale of e-bike conversion kits it deems unsafe, according to a report from Cycling Electric. The call forms part of a newly launched Ride Safe campaign, which the company is promoting as it faces mounting pressure over rider safety and equipment standards.
Deliveroo's own delivery fleet has been a significant source of demand for conversion kits, which allow standard bicycles to be motorised. The company, along with other delivery operators, has recently found itself under scrutiny in relation to the performance and safety of such kits in daily courier use.
The request targets the retail availability of conversion kits rather than their use per se, suggesting a regulatory route that would restrict what dealers and distributors can stock. If enacted, the measure would change the supply landscape for aftermarket e-bike components across the UK market.
The report does not specify which kits are considered unsafe, nor does it detail the technical criteria for a ban. It also leaves open whether the measure would apply to kits already in the supply chain or only to future imports and sales.
For European dealers and distributors, the key question is whether similar restrictions could follow in other markets. The UK's position as a major hub for delivery fleets means any regulatory shift here may influence component sourcing strategies and homologation requirements elsewhere.
